Wedding Ring Inscription Ideas (that can be kept between just the two of you)

Your wedding ring is unarguably the most important part of your special day. While it’s easy to get lost in the bluster of planning a wedding, your rings are the one item from your big day that remain long after the dress goes into storage or the pictures gather dust.

Engraving your ring is a simple action that can add an extra special touch and add more meaning to the ceremony, even if it’s just the pair of you that know about it.

Deciding is the easy part, what to get inscribed proves a tad more difficult.

Wedding band engraving ideas are endless, providing an opportunity to be creative. And, given they’re intended to be worn for life, the line you choose is always best to hold some sentimental meaning.

Classic Wedding Ring Engraving Ideas

It’s hard to imagine that such huge feelings could be condensed to fit on the inside of a wedding band. Yet, sometimes it’s the simple few words that mean the most.

  • I Love You
  • Forever and Always
  • I Choose You
  • Forever Begins Now
  • Happily Ever After
  • Written in the Starts
  • Soulmates
  • Forevermore
  • My one true love
  • Forever Yours

Engrave Each Other’s Names

What a comfort it could be to have your loved one’s name on your wedding band. Getting each other’s names engraved on a ring is a great way to feel closer to the other and have the ring be a constant reminder of the love between you.

Besides being very romantic, it is also the logical way to go. Even if you are working with a shorter size ring of 2mm, you can fit your partner’s name, last name, initials, or nickname. You can also play around with the idea – add a heart between both names, engrave only the other’s name, get each other’s initials, and more!

Engrave a Special Date

The date of the ceremony is a popular choice (and will remove any future forgotten anniversaries) but it isn’t the only option. Your lives, up to this point have held many important dates and memories. Any of them can be used.

  • The day you met
  • the first I love yous
  • the first date
  • the date you realised you knew they were “the one”

Decide on the style of inscription you want – numeral, roman, or written while keeping in mind the readability of the text on the ring.

Split Messages

A message split between your’ and your partner’s ring is a clever and fun way to engrave your ring. Try making it a special message – only completed when together. Make it funny or romantic – it’s sweet either way!

  • To Have/To Hold
  • His/Hers
  • I Do/So Do I
  • Always/Forever
  • Little Spoon/Big Spoon
  • I love you/I know

Funny or Cheeky Engravings

Couples who laugh together stay together, or so the saying goes, and lightheartedness is a striking quality in relationships and sometimes it’s the inside jokes or witty phrase that make things funnier.

Obviously only the pair of you know your inside jokes but here are some of the more popular choices.

  • Finders Keepers
  • There’s no turning back now.
  • Dibs
  • Alarm will sound if removed
  • Challenge Accepted
  • To infinity and beyond
  • No Takebacks
  • You’re my Lobster

A Spiritual or Religious Verse Engraving

If a couple is inclined towards religion, a meaningful bible verse may be a perfect way to signify that.

Most religious quotes are too long and cannot fit on a ring, which is why you may have to opt for engraving only the verse number and name.

If you do choose to get a short phrase engraved, it is a good choice to opt for a machine engraving rather than hand engraving which is better for smaller-sized engravings.

Symbols and Trends

Symbols work great with engraving. Your jeweler would definitely thank you for it! They are the easiest to work with, look fabulous, and can be very personal.

Getting a heartbeat pattern engraved on the outer side of the ring looks beautiful on any type of ring. Similarly, many couples go for engraving musical symbols of their special song and lyric.

Fingerprints are another beautifully romantic idea to add a personal touch to your ring!

While working with a classic infinity symbol with a few lettering work great and is a safe way to go, engraving a personal symbol is also a unique way to make this already personal jewelry piece feel even more special.

Something for Just the Two of You!

Having an inside joke or a moment relevant to the two of you might be your best option. If a specific location holds a special place in your relationship, get creative and engrave something in their local language. Your wedding ring can have its very own secret message.

French, Latin, and Italian are known as the many different languages of love. A simple I Love You said in French may be tenfolds more romantic for the right person.

Similarly, if the two of you are math wizards, a special way to treasure the bond could be engraving the word love in binary code.

This is the perfect opportunity to dig deep into your relationship and think about all the beautiful moments you and your partner had together. It may be a holiday, a shared interest, a dinner, a joke, or a conversation that brought the two of you closer. Signifying that moment on your wedding ring is one of the most romantic gestures.

Wedding Vows

Engraving wedding vows on your ring solidifies what you hold most dear as a married couple. It can be everlasting love, respect, having fun together, or being each others’ friends above everything else.

A piece of your wedding vow engraved on the wedding band is sure to sweep even the most hopeless romantic off their feet.

Things to Keep In Mind When Getting Your Ring Engraved

Ring Size

A standard wedding ring size is around 2mm to 4mm for women and 3mm to 6mm for men. It sits on top of the engagement ring which is slightly thinner than the wedding ring. We don’t recommend going anywhere below 1.5mm as it may lead to bending and not stand the test of time.

Any engraving on a ring with less than 1.5mm will not look neat. For a clean engraving, opt for a wedding ring of 2mm or more.

Time to Decide

When deciding on an engraving, take plenty of time! Since getting the wedding band engraved before the wedding ceremony might put you in a time crunch, you can always choose to get it engraved after the wedding ceremony.

It might not be a surprise, but it can be better to discuss with your partner what you both hold dear enough to get engraved on your rings.

Also, many times rings can need resizing. Engravings should only be done on perfectly sized rings or it can mess up your characters. It might be better to wait until your partner tries out the ring before having it engraved.

Keep it Short

Again, you don’t want the text on your ring to become unreadable. A ring can only hold a certain number of characters. Considering the size of a standard ring, you can fit around 20-50 engraved letters, on average. Long sentences with multiple lines of text can make it hard to read and look stuffy, so better go for a short phrase instead.

The Bottom Line

Wedding rings have been a timeless practice right since medieval times – a symbol of eternal love, fidelity, and union. To make this tradition truly yours, engraved rings are the best way to go. The best part about wedding ring engravings is that you have complete liberty on choosing what stays on your ring finger for the rest of your life.

So, get your creative juices flowing and come up with the perfect engraving idea that speaks to you and your dream of that perfect wedding ring. You have tons of different options, whether it is a simple infinity sign, a witty phrase, a line from a famous play, or the cheesiest sappiest dialogue – as long as it is near and dear to you, you can’t possibly go wrong!
