What is a Hidden Halo Engagement Ring (and should you buy one)?

I’m going to be honest and tell you I’m definitely biased in this because my choice was a double halo engagement ring, and if I’m honest, I love it to death every day.

The hidden halo is a similar idea to the traditional halo setting but the halo location provides vastly different end results (and that’s part of why engagement rings are so interesting and individual).

The hidden halo is about bling but a more subtle version and both are beautiful in their own right. So let’s get into some information so you can decide if a hidden halo is the right ring for you.

What is a Halo Engagement Ring Setting?

For context and comparison, a halo setting is one in which the central diamond or stone is encircled by a collection of tiny diamonds or gemstones.

The center stone can be surrounded by either one or two circles adding a little extra sparkle (or a lot depending on your taste).

In addition to making the ring look noticeably bigger, this setting serves to reflect light and bring peoples focus back to the centre stone and draw peoples gaze.

WHAT IS A HIDDEN HALO ENGAGEMENT RING SETTING?

A hidden halo engagement ring is similar to the traditional halo ring or double halo in that it has a ring of smaller diamonds surrounding the main stone. However, the major difference is that the side stones, the “halo”, aren’t visible from the top view.

Without closer inspection, one might not notice the halo aspect at first glance and might even classify it as a solitaire ring setting.

It’s only when viewing the ring from the side or at an angle that the small stones become visible.

The purpose of this unique setting is to have the light bounce off the diamonds from different angles and essentially add more sparkle or brilliance in a more subdued fashion.

The halo will generally sit underneath the center stone rather than around the rim or edge, thus the hidden nature.

Both the hidden halo and the traditional halo engagement ring can be designed with lab grown diamonds, man-made diamonds or natural diamonds.

Moissanite rings are also growing in popularity and appear to be a modern take on bagging your dream engagement ring at a fraction of the cost.

A coloured diamond is an option too (and honestly I think would take a stunning hidden halo to the next level).

Similarly the band can be gold, white gold, or rose gold and can be matched with a plain band or pave wrap.

REASONS TO CHOOSE A HIDDEN HALO ENGAGEMENT RING

It makes the center gemstone more prominent.

The hidden halo designs add a unique new twist to the classic halo engagement ring style. With the hidden halo, the diamonds are set underneath the center stone, creating the illusion of a larger diamond. This design also allows for more light to enter the diamond, enhancing its sparkle and brilliance, and leaves a lasting impression.

This becomes more noticeable when the ring is at an angle. Most consider how the ring will look from the top, this adds more to an area of an engagment ring that is often neglected and offers more attention grabbing power as a result.

It adds a layer of protection

By having the center diamond take center stage and surrounding it with pave diamonds, the center stone is less likely to chip or scratch. This is particularly important for those who lead active lifestyles or work with their hands frequently.

It works with any diamond shape

The hidden halo setting provides more versatility by lending itself easily to any cut or shape diamonds. Round brilliant cut diamonds, oval, or cushion cut diamond, baguette cut ****or radiant shaped diamond all look stunning with the hidden halo ring style.

Because the hidden halo setting provides enough room for the diamond without making it look cluttered additional flexibility is available in your design. It can also blend seamlessly into solitaire or channel settings.

It adds a touch of sophistication

The hidden halo engagement ring is a great option for those who want a more subtle, understated look in their engagement ring design. While the center stone still sparkles and shines, the hidden halo design adds an extra layer of elegance and sophistication without being too flashy or overwhelming.

There is no price difference in most retailers

Essentially the halo and hidden halo are the same type of rign style with the position being the only point of noticeable difference. Depending on your ring designer, of course, most cost the same.

REASONS TO AVOID HIDDEN HALO ENGAGEMENT RINGS

All decisions come with positives and negatives. So, to avoid any pitfalls it’s prudent to note a few of the potential downsides to a hidden halo engagement ring.

It is hidden

Stating the obvious? Yes, but still worth noting.

The halo is hidden. Often this stlye can be miscategorised as a solitaire or channel style ring. If it’s wow factor you’re in searsc of you may be better suited to the traditional halo option.

It makes the halo more vulnerable to damage

Diamonds are tough but not infallible. They can get scratched too. So, if you’re a ring stacker or work in a profession that would constantly bump the ring into other metals, a hidden halo may not be the best choice.

It requires a higher setting.

The designer needs to make room for the hidden halo of diamonds. As such the center stone needs to sit higher on the ring.

If you prefer a low-profile engagement ring, a hidden halo engagement ring isn’t the best option.

SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A HIDDEN HALO RING?

Overall, choosing a hidden halo engagement ring is a smart choice for those who want a unique, elegant, and practical ring that will stand the test of time.

If you want something more sparkly or with a more noticeable wow-factor opting for the visible halo may be a better choice.

Ultimately, it’s your decision and your style preferences, lifestyle and bugget all need to be taken into consideration.
